Living in harmony with nature

It has always been the ideal lifestyle for Chinese people.

Suzhou has never lacked lakeside villas, yet it has always been short of mountain‑side ones; and if a property could simultaneously command both mountain and lake—two of the city’s most prized assets—it would be an exceedingly rare find indeed.

This project is sited in the ancient town of Dongshan, a historic settlement with a thousand-year legacy, located at No. 18 Yuhua Road, Dongshan Town, approximately 30 km from the city center. The site enjoys a prime location nestled against forests and mountains, offering the distinct advantage of mountain‑side living. With an exceptional ecological environment and superb natural scenery, it harmoniously integrates with the broader landscape of the Jiangnan region, where the tranquil waters of Lake Tai provide a serene backdrop, inviting residents to dwell in harmony with nature.

“Picking chrysanthemums by the eastern fence, I leisurely behold the southern hills”—a pastoral charm far removed from the clamor of the world. Retiring to the mountains and forests, with “heaven as my blanket and earth as my bed,” one savors the unpretentious joys of the wilds. Such seclusion is not an escape from reality, but rather a Zen‑like state—a quest for inner peace, composure, and serene detachment that reaches far beyond the mundane. It resonates with the Confucian‑merchant ethos of today: poised, steady, confident, and at ease.

Through the shaping of architectural space, an interaction is established between the environment and the human spirit.

Design Description

Architecture and the environment are inevitably “ You are in me, and I am in you. Its compositional form allows the architecture to integrate into nature with an expansive gesture.

The project is situated near woodlands, distinct from both the urban center and the suburban fringe, and should therefore feature a unique form and spatial organization. Integrating the building into the mountainous woodland became the guiding principle of the design, redefining the relationship between humanity and nature.

At the outset of the design process, we conducted an on-site survey. The site is divided into two distinct parcels by a mountainous ridge that extends into the property: the southeast portion accommodates residential buildings and a stormwater drainage channel; the eastern side adjoins the Yuhua Shengjing Scenic Area; while the western and northwestern areas are designated for school use. The entire site retains the original topographical character of the Jiangnan hilly landscape.

The site is nestled at the foot of the eastern hill, surrounded by lush vegetation and dotted with a rich array of renowned ancient trees. To safeguard these precious specimens and preserve the area’s pristine ecological balance, the project deliberately avoided relocating any existing trees. Instead, the building’s sinuous form and the strategic placement of residential units are seamlessly integrated with the landscaped courtyards, creating a harmonious dialogue between architecture and nature. The completed structure is embraced by a verdant canopy of trees, offering residents a high‑quality living environment.

“Dongting is beautiful—its beauty lies in its mountains,” with 500 mu of Yuhua Scenic Area stretching tightly around it, flanked by towering peaks on three sides and fragrant fruit trees, boasting an air‑borne negative ion concentration several times higher than that of the urban area.

Design Concept

— Deeply explore the intrinsic qualities of the site and establish an organic connection with its surrounding environment.

— Maximizing the utilization of landscapes and vegetation resources.

— Maximizing the protection of water resources on the site and establishing a water network that defines primary and secondary hydrological systems.

— Shaping the spatial gradations that continually bring humans and nature closer together.

— Integrated into the broader spatial context.

In the mountainous setting, vegetation will emerge as the landscape’s defining element. Native plantings within the site will be preserved to the greatest extent possible, with particular emphasis on the ginkgo and mandarin orange groves. These existing stands will be reimagined as ornamental woodlands, and color‑leaf species will be introduced to enhance seasonal visual interest.

While preserving the existing vegetation is only one aspect, it is even more important to thoughtfully arrange the native tree species of the original mountain forest in a garden‑like style, emphasizing a sense of natural wildness. Along several streams, a variety of aquatic plants are employed to enrich the spatial layers and add vibrant colors.

Construction scale

The project covers a total land area of 66,513 square meters, with a total floor area of 13,272.73 square meters. The building comprises one basement level and two above-ground floors, providing 112 parking spaces—56 on the ground level and 56 in the underground garage—and 56 bicycle parking spaces.

The villa project features complex detailing; while staying true to the original intent of the architectural facade, structural design optimizes joint lines to minimize on‑site cast‑in‑place work, reduce steel consumption, and cut labor and material costs, thereby achieving a harmonious balance between economy and performance.

In terms of planning and layout, the main thoroughfare and the cluster pathways of Hanyue Lou Community create an intimate, exquisitely crafted Suzhou‑style garden setting. The 56 Chinese‑style villas are seamlessly integrated into the natural terrain, with every residence offering a picturesque view, as if born of nature itself.

A Chinese‑style landscape garden has been meticulously designed to follow the contours of the hillside, featuring pavilions, terraces, and elegant structures set amidst artificial rockeries and ponds—every step reveals a new vista. Scenic clusters encircle a central sloping landscape corridor, ensuring that every home enjoys the charm of a mountain‑top garden.

A comprehensive and clear vision for the villa’s design, coupled with a genuine integration of the landscape, extends the architecture into the broader surroundings, creating a serene, mountain‑embracing, lake‑facing retreat that feels like a veritable fairyland nestled within the woods.

Compared with the hustle and bustle of urban villas, this place exudes a quiet elegance and serene composure. Its superb living environment, millennia‑old cultural heritage, and year‑round abundance of bountiful produce all make it an ideal haven. After Hushu, look no further than Banshan.
