Educational buildings serve a relatively well-defined user group: students aged 12 to 14, who are energetic, eager for independence, and possess a strong sense of self‑esteem and a pronounced desire to express themselves. Consequently, the design places particular emphasis on how architecture can help students with diverse personalities better integrate into communal life, foster a stronger sense of belonging, enable self‑expression, and enhance both learning and creativity.

 

This project is located in the Science and Technology City area of the High-tech Zone. It comprises 12 tracks and 36 classes, with a student population of 1,800. The total floor area is 51,366.2 square meters, of which 41,364.8 square meters are above ground and 10,001.4 square meters are underground.

Design Concept

The project, through the design of communal spaces connecting the teaching areas with other functional zones, creates an ambiance that symbolizes “ Valley of Wisdom, Valley of Vitality, Valley of Greenery A public shared space that serves as a spiritual hub for faculty and students to study, engage in activities, and interact.

 

 

Valley of Wisdom

The design breaks away from the conventional barracks‑style campus spatial configuration by inserting a three‑dimensional, meandering corridor system between the academic buildings and the teaching support areas. This creates a fresh, distinctive campus public space and architectural identity, transforming the site into a “Valley of Wisdom” that sparks students’ curiosity and sense of exploration, thereby enhancing their learning and creative capacities.

 

 

Valley of Vitality

The perimeter corridor system has been appropriately expanded in certain areas, providing students with additional open‑space platforms and fostering a more flexible, welcoming social environment. By weaving a network of social activities, the design enriches the teaching zones with spaces for exhibitions and performances, casual discussions, playful recreation, and hands‑on nature‑based learning, transforming the campus into a vibrant “valley of vitality” where students can engage in healthy interactions more frequently and conveniently, and integrate more fully into campus life.

 

 

Green Valley

Integrate multi-layered, three-dimensional landscape greening into public spaces to create a lush, verdant, and inviting green valley.

 

 

Within Green Valley, the landscape is thoughtfully layered across ground-level gardens, elevated skywalks, and dynamic activity platforms, creating a three-dimensional spatial experience where every step reveals a new vista and each courtyard offers a grand, immersive setting. This design enables students to connect with, appreciate, and enjoy nature, even within the campus’s limited space.

 

Overall Layout

The design arranges three teaching buildings in a linear sequence along the southern edge of the site, with each building benefiting from ample natural light, south-facing views, and a tranquil learning environment. The remaining functional spaces are situated on the northern side of the site to shield the area from urban noise to the north. A functional pattern of “quiet in the south, active in the north” has taken shape. The two zones are efficiently connected via a public space known as the “Valley of Wisdom.”

 

 

The site is elongated, wider on the west side and narrower on the east. The sports facilities are arranged along a north–south axis on the western portion of the site, serving as a buffer between the adjacent urban arterial road to the west and the school’s teaching area.

Outdoor corridors and staircases seamlessly integrate all the individual buildings into a cohesive whole. Through an integrated architectural‑landscape design, the building’s form guides both horizontal and vertical circulation, while “social staircases” within the structure encourage informal interactions and social engagement among students.

 

 

Together, these elements create both casual and formal spaces for interaction, while the shifting functions and diverse configurations ensure that the area remains vibrant around the clock.

 

Spatial structure

The design draws inspiration from the “” of traditional Chinese gardens in terms of overall spatial composition and the interplay between openness and enclosure. Corridor, courtyard, garden, and orchard “The four major spatial elements are reconfigured in the context of campus space.”

 

 

Corridor : A transportation space, winding and varied, achieving a visual effect of ever-changing vistas with each step.

court : To create small-scale interior courtyards between buildings, shaping intimate environments that meet functional requirements for ventilation and daylighting.

garden : A vast landscaped space that balances the architectural ensemble, serving as the spiritual heart of the entire campus.

garden : Open spaces outside the building complex, serving as sports facilities for the campus.

Architectural Form and Facade Treatment

The design embodies the concept of blending the modernity of a science and technology city with Suzhou’s regional traditions.

 

 

Through its staggered architectural forms, rich and exquisite detailing, and crisp, dynamic spatial relationships, the design embodies a style that is both simple and grand, while also generating a sense of spaciousness and rhythmic vitality.

The main campus entrance is anchored by the Library Building, with the ground floor housing a faculty reading room and a 200-seat circular auditorium, the second floor dedicated to open-shelf reading, and the third floor accommodating periodical reading and an electronic reading room.

 

Students can swiftly reach the classrooms on the second, third, and fourth floors of the teaching buildings via the stepped plaza at the entrance. The three teaching buildings are each designated for one grade level, with the ground floor uniformly allocated to faculty spaces such as classrooms, administrative offices, and areas for pedagogical research and grade-level meetings.
