Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd., a subsidiary of the Sumitomo Group—one of the world’s top 500 companies—is a global leader in semiconductor packaging materials, holding the largest market share worldwide for epoxy molding compounds. The company primarily manufactures epoxy molding compounds for integrated circuits and chip‑attach adhesives, offering comprehensive solutions to semiconductor manufacturers and serving as a key materials supplier to the industry.

Suzhou Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. was established in the Industrial Park in 1995 and was among the first foreign-invested enterprises to locate there. The company’s project to produce epoxy molding compounds (EME) for semiconductor packaging is a key component of its industrial eco‑system development. The site is situated at the intersection of Jiepu Road East and Jinsheng Road North in Suzhou Industrial Park, covering approximately 85 mu of land and being developed in two phases. Phase I has now been completed. The industrial park has been built to a three‑star green building standard, incorporating automated engineering systems, AI/IoT‑based management platforms, high‑efficiency energy‑saving technologies, and state‑of‑the‑art environmental protection equipment, making it a safe, environmentally friendly, and energy‑efficient facility.

Overall layout, graceful flow lines

The epoxy molding compound (EME) production project for semiconductor packaging at Suzhou Sumitomo Bakelite Co., Ltd. is a multifunctional, integrated campus that combines manufacturing, R&D and production, and corporate headquarters operations. Drawing on current trends in industrial park development and the site’s unique geographical conditions, the design adopts the concept of “An Industrial Valley, A Smart Manufacturing Core.” The overall layout centers on the core production workshops, with manufacturing and R&D facilities, logistical support services, and office spaces arranged in a ring around them, creating a radiating, open‑plan configuration. The R&D and office buildings are configured as low‑rise slab structures facing the main street façade to the north, leaving a visual corridor in the middle that naturally guides pedestrian flow into the internal landscape features, thus fostering a spatial composition that seamlessly blends indoor and outdoor environments.

Joint production and development, with a balanced approach of tension and relaxation.

The park’s office building and R&D workshop are arranged around the central production facility, creating a continuous yet dynamically varied interface. The design employs public spaces to unify the overall composition: the outer ring of buildings is dedicated to R&D and manufacturing, while the inner workshops are connected via communal corridors that link supporting facilities and R&D departments, resulting in a terraced architectural form that rises in the center and slopes gently toward the edges. The master plan strikes a balance between density and openness—internal production areas are tightly integrated, while external spaces are deliberately articulated to create a well‑proportioned interplay of tension and relaxation between inside and out.

Rigorous and pragmatic, efficient and convenient

The circulation design of modern industrial parks is a critical component in ensuring efficient R&D and production. The design prioritizes the creation of clear, user‑friendly traffic flows within medium- and large‑scale facilities, while also fostering a comfortable, safe, and pedestrian‑friendly environment. Logistics routes are routed along the outer perimeter road, ensuring that each workshop has its own dedicated loading and unloading area. Conventional motorized and non‑motorized vehicle traffic enters the site via external access roads and proceeds to designated parking areas, thereby preserving a secure, open pedestrian space. Pedestrian pathways originate at the central main entrance and, through landscaped transitional spaces, lead into the various building clusters. Pedestrian and vehicular traffic, as well as passenger and freight flows, are segregated to prevent interference.

Energy conservation and environmental protection, intelligent manufacturing

The park is constructed in accordance with the three-star green building standard, aiming to create high-quality architecture that conserves resources, protects the environment, reduces pollution, and provides users with healthy, functional, and efficient spaces, thereby maximizing harmonious coexistence between humans and nature.

The project is designed and constructed around the core concept of a “green factory.” It incorporates a solar water‑heating system, a rainwater‑harvesting system, and a solar photovoltaic power‑generation system, which together significantly reduce energy and water consumption during operation. In addition, an energy management system is in place to monitor the plant’s energy use in real time, facilitating more effective energy‑saving management.
