The project has a total floor area of 33,600 square meters.
Its east–west length is 211 meters, and its north–south depth is 71.5 meters.
The single floor covers approximately 13,000 square meters.
Its primary functions include an ice and snow-themed world, along with supporting retail shops, dining options, and a movie theater.
The main ice-and-snow area covers 18,000 square meters.
The ski resort features two slopes.
The beginner slope is 110 meters long with a vertical drop of 9 meters.
The intermediate trail is 163 meters long with a vertical drop of 24 meters.
Catering to visitors with varying levels of technical expertise.
A snow play area is set up in the lower section of the slope to meet families’ needs for fun and leisure.
Equipped with interactive features such as an ice slide and a snow turntable.
A circular viewing promenade is provided at the top of the cold zone.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the ski slopes, enriching the spatial experience and adding depth.
The entire ice and snow world is equipped with an intelligent environmental control system.
Real-time adjustment of temperature, humidity, and air quality ensures comfort and safety.
Project Design Highlights
Structural Highlights
To meet the functional requirements of an ice-and-snow-themed space with a column-free interior, the roof employs a large‑span steel truss system, creating an ultra‑wide span of approximately 200 m east–west and 70 m north–south—an exceptionally demanding design challenge.
Fire Protection Design
The cold‑zone and warm‑zone preparation areas of the ski resort are designed as a single fire compartment, with a total area of 11,520 m². Evacuation distances are based on a walking distance of 45 meters, thereby meeting the requirements for accommodating exceptionally large spaces. Fire‑protection measures include extra‑long fire‑hose reels, wheeled snow‑sled carts equipped with pressurized ABC dry‑powder extinguishers, oversized directional signage luminaires, and safety exits fitted with audible‑visual alarm devices featuring voice prompts.
Thermal insulation design
In the cold‑zone section of the ski resort, the building design incorporates a double‑skin façade system: the outer envelope consists of an aluminum panel curtain wall and an aluminum‑magnesium‑manganese metal roofing, while the inner envelope comprises rockwool sandwich insulation panels and a suspended ceiling, creating an air buffer layer between the interior and exterior and enhancing the building’s thermal performance and energy efficiency.
Construction Highlights
The roof trusses have a minimum height of 3.6 m and a maximum height of 5.24 m, with a total weight of approximately 1,080 tonnes, posing significant challenges to construction. For the roof truss installation, an in‑situ erection‑and‑assembly approach combined with sectional lifting is employed; in the hoisting zone, a method involving horizontal assembly followed by off‑site block‑by‑block lifting using truck cranes is adopted. The roof bracing trusses, along with connecting braces and purlins, are installed using tower cranes.
Challenges in Project Design
The national engineering construction fire‑protection technical standards for ski resorts do not contain relevant provisions; therefore, it is necessary to refer to and adopt international standards or foreign engineering‑construction fire‑protection technical standards, which classifies the design as a special‑purpose fire‑protection design. The design exhibits several issues, including excessively large fire‑compartment areas, unacceptably long evacuation distances, the inability to install fire‑rescue windows in certain areas, the failure of the central‑area fire elevator to reach the top floor, the absence of a smoke‑exhaust system in the cold zone, and the lack of an automatic sprinkler system. Ultimately, a special‑purpose fire‑protection design expert review meeting was convened, and the resulting expert opinions were adopted as the basis for the project’s design.
Interior design emphasizes functionality and experiential quality. The Ice and Snow World area employs a double-layer insulation system and constant-temperature, constant-humidity technology. Ensure stable operations throughout the year.
The Ice and Snow World serves as a landmark commercial complex in Taihu Science City.
It will leverage the industry–university–research resources of Nanjing University.
Promote the integrated development of culture, sports, and tourism.
It is expected to accommodate over 3 million visitors annually, establishing a new landmark for the urban area.
